Around the World: Is Facebook #1?

How popular is Facebook around the world?
Most of us have no idea what other social networking sites are available on a day-to-day basis.  According to “HowManyAreThere.net” there are more than 200 online social networking sites.  How many of you have heard of Renren or Kaixin?  Renren and Kaixin are very similar to Facebook.  They are the most popular social networking sites in China today, with Renren as #1.  Renren has over 147 million registered users, who are predominately students, with over 31 million active users per month (www.mashable.com).  Other popular sites include Sina Weibo (like Twitter - micro blogging), Douban (also like Facebook), and Wechat (mobile text and voice messaging service).

In Russia, most individuals can be found on Vkontakte.  “VK,” as it’s called, has become so popular because it has a file-sharing system that easily allows users to download music and movies for free (www.YoungDigitalLab.net).  Unlike Facebook and Renren, the majorities of the “VK” users is not students and are over 25 years of age.  Another popular networking site, for teenagers and children, is MyWorld@mail.ru.  It has attracted such young users because the site allows you to send private messages, send and receive pictures and videos, post blogs, etc.  Like Facebook and MySpace, it allows the users to see what their friends are doing in real-time.
Does anyone out there use other social networking sites?  What are their benefits?  Ease of use?

  1. Are this other social networking sites having the same issues that facebook is constantly facing about security and privacy of their users. If not are we able to use them in the United States.

  2. With there being multiple social networks around the world that do similarly the same thing, do we think that one day there will only be one world wide network that does everything today's networks do? If so, I wonder how that network would be controlled and where the main headquarters would be?

  3. I have never heard of those other social media websites. From what I can find online they are not available to us. I am sure that in today's society they are facing the same problems as we are. I wonder if Facebook is available in other countries? And if so does the privacy policy change country to country ?

  4. What where your findings as far as World wide ranking, is face book number 1? As far as I know Facebook is available in other countries, I come from a small country called Zambia in Africa, and a large number of my friends and family memebers have a Facebook account. In addition to this, my sister is in school in England (has a Facebook account), and my parents live in the U.A.E, United Arab Emirates and they have Face book accounts.

  5. Social media sites will continue to struggle for the top spot in each country. Though there are different sites by different names they all have similar features. As technology progresses it will be interesting to see how social media keeps up and adapts to those changes. The one who stays on top of the game with the latest sought after features and accessibility will be the ones that last. I believe Facebook is global. As long as they continue their current path and increase shareholder wealth they will continue to dominate the market in the U.S.

  6. It is interesting to learn the different types of social media websites that are used globally. Someone in America automatically assumes that Facebook is the most prominent social media site since we use this website so much. Most of us have never heard of the other types of social media websites that are used because we are only exposed to the ones that are prominent in the U.S. It will be interesting to see after becoming more aware of other sites if the U.S. will adopt some of them.
